We long for Sunday School.

The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee.

This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessings

5. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds be black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School.

6. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?

BIBLE PASSAGE: MATTHEW 5:14-16

[14]Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

[15]Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

[16]Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

MEMORY VERSE: “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14 (NKJV).

INTRODUCTION: Jesus used the phrase ‘Light of the World’ to describe Himself and His disciples in the New Testament. The light of the world expresses the testimony of a follower of Christ, who reveals and illuminates the truth of Jesus Christ everywhere and at all times.

OUTLINES
1. THE SYMBOLISM OF LIGHT
2. BELIEVERS AS LIGHT CARRIERS

THE SYMBOLISM OF LIGHT
Biblically, light is used severally as a symbol of holiness (Isa.10:17). This depicts purity and transparency which must be evident in the life of the followers of Christ. Light depicts knowledge and the followers of Christ are expected to be people who live in the understanding of the present and the future (Ps.119:130; Lk.1:76-79).

Light represents divine wisdom which was evident in the life of Stephen and Daniel (Acts 6:10; Dan.5:14). It also epitomises victory for every believer in Christ Jesus (Esth. 8:16-17). Christ showcases His light through the lives of His followers (Isa. 60:1-3). This translates to the fact that the followers of Christ must stand out (Prov.4:18).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Teacher should ask students to mention the symbolism of light.

BELIEVERS AS LIGHT CARRIERS
Believers who have the light of Christ residing in them are expected to shine and be positive stimuli anywhere they are in the world (Rom.13:12). Their light must shine as they show forth their good works (Matt.5:16). These carriers of light are to illuminate the world as they bring the Good News to the lost (Isa.61:1), be a blessing to people (Acts 9:39), proffer solutions to problems (Dan.2:24), impact the world, take over territories for Jesus and be influencers in the world of business, politics, sports, social media, etc. (Gen.41:39-41; Acts 16:14-15; Dan.6:1-3). Integrity should also be the hallmark of these light carriers as they faithfully walk the talk (Job 27:5).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should mention other ways believers can show they are carriers of light.

CONCLUSION: The light of every follower of Christ must shine all over the world.

QUESTIONS:
1. What are the things light symbolises?
2. How are believers light carriers?
