How To Plan A Personal Spiritual Retreat In 5 Steps
1. KNOW WHY YOU WANT TO GO ON A RETREAT
It is important to have a reason for your retreat because this will sustain you when you feel tired and want to give up on the retreat before time.
You do not have to think too much about it, you can simply read through our post Signs That You Need A Personal Retreat and pick the sign/signs that best applies to your current season in life.
So why are you going on a retreat? Is it simply for spiritual rejuvenation? Because you’re stepping into a new season of life? Because the year is coming to an end? Because you need direction and clarity? Find out your why.
2. CHOOSE A GOOD TIME
You have to plan and choose a time and duration for your retreat before embarking on one. The time and duration you choose depends on different factors like your availability and the purpose for the retreat.
If you’re a worker or a student, you may need to request for a leave or use your school break.
Also, if the purpose for your retreat is very intense, you may need more than just a few days.
3. PICK A GOOD LOCATION
In our post about How To Meditate On Scriptures, we discussed how that the place you are when you set out to spend time with God plays a huge role in your reception from Him.
God is omnipresent (He is everywhere) but He can not easily be accessed everywhere.
Some places are distracting and the atmosphere does not support intense spiritual activities.
You must pray and ask God to show you where to have your retreat. It may be as simple as your room when everyone has gone out, your church (if you’re allowed to), a mountain or a prayer ground.
4. OUTLINE YOUR PLAN IN A BOOK OR JOURNAL
Humans are easily distracted. This is why when planning your personal spiritual retreat, you should write out the things you seek to do and achieve in it.
We recommend that you start with thanksgiving. Write out in your journal that for the first day or first few hours of the retreat, you will just spend time thanking God. You can even go as far as writing everything you want to thank God for.
Then you can proceed to write out the things you want seek the face of God for.
Evaluation of your progress so far, request for wisdom for the next phase of your life, empowerment, miracles, direction, etc.
Do not forget to give God time to speak to you.
5. GET THE NECESSARY MATERIALS
To make your retreat engaging and more interesting, you need some materials.
Materials such as your Bible, pens, highlighters, journals, music player for worship songs and sounds, etc. Prepare these materials ready for your retreat.
Once you have done all of these, you are ready to embark on your personal spiritual retreat. If you are a family person actively connected to parents, spouse or children, you must let them know ahead of time and prepare every need that may arise as a result of your temporary unavailability.
