DON’T TRY DRY FASTING UNTIL YOU KNOW THIS 5 RULES

Dry fasting for believers.

It’s one of the most intense types of fasting, where a believer abstains from both food and water for a longer period than the usual 6am – 6pm. It is a spiritual exercise that many believers engage in for divine intervention, spiritual empowerment, and closeness to God.

Throughout the Bible, several people engaged in dry fasting, including:

Moses (Exodus 34:28)—He fasted for 40 days without food and water while receiving the Ten Commandments.
Elijah (1 Kings 19:8)—He went 40 days without eating after being strengthened by an angel.
Jesus (Matthew 4:2)—He fasted for 40 days and nights before beginning His earthly ministry.
Esther (Esther 4:16)—She and the Jews fasted for three days and nights before approaching the king.
Paul (Acts 9:9)—He fasted for three days after his encounter with Jesus on the way to Damascus.

Types of Dry Fasting

  1. Absolute Dry Fasting—No food or water for a set period.
  2. Partial Dry Fasting—No food, but minimal intake of water or other liquids (this is often done for extended dry fasts).
  3. Supernatural Dry Fasting—A special grace from God allows the person to fast beyond human capacity (e.g., Moses and Elijah for 40 days).

5 Different Kinds Of Fasting

 Here are the 5 rules:

1. Duration of Dry Fasting: Dry fasting is usually done within the following durations;

Short Dry Fast: 6 hours to 24 hours (e.g., fasting from morning till evening).
Medium Dry Fast: 2 to 3 days (e.g., the Esther Fast).
Extended Dry Fast: 7 to 40 days (requires divine instruction and proper preparation).
Most believers fast from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, breaking with light food or liquid in the evening.

2. What Can You Take During a Dry Fast?

A true dry fast means no food and no water at all. However, if someone is doing a modified dry fast, they may:

– Take very little water in the evening (for long fasts).
– Eat fruits after breaking the fast to regain energy.
– Drink coconut water or diluted fruit juice if the fast is prolonged beyond three days.

3. Can You Engage in Physical Activities?

Since you are not drinking water, the body dehydrates faster, so it is advisable to:

– Avoid excessive talking or engaging in strenuous physical activities.
– Rest when necessary to preserve energy.
– Spend more time praying, reading the Bible, and worshipping rather than focusing on the hunger.

4. How to Prepare for a Dry Fast: To prevent your body from reacting negatively, you should prepare before starting;

– Reduce heavy meals at least two days before the fast.
– Stay hydrated before starting the fast to avoid severe dehydration.
– Mentally and spiritually prepare by praying before the fast begins.

5. Breaking a Dry Fast Safely: When coming off a dry fast, you should;

– Start with water before eating any solid food.
– Take fruits or light soup before eating a heavy meal.
– Avoid overeating immediately to prevent stomach discomfort.
– Continue praying and thanking God for strength during the fast.

Spiritual Benefits of Dry Fasting

Divine Power & Anointing – Jesus fasted before launching His ministry (Luke 4:14).

Deliverance from Demonic Strongholds – Some problems only go away through fasting (Mark 9:29).

Divine Direction & Revelation – Dry fasting makes you more sensitive to God’s voice.

Breakthroughs in Difficult Situations – Esther fasted, and God saved her people (Esther 4:16).

Spiritual Purification – Dry fasting helps crucify the flesh and align your spirit with God.

Dry fasting is a powerful spiritual discipline that should be done with wisdom. If it’s a prolonged fast, you may take light fluids in the evenings to sustain your body. Most importantly, focus on seeking God and not just the physical aspect of fasting.
