RCCG JUNIOR ZEAL FOR AGE 16-19 MANUAL 12 JANUARY 2024

LESSON TWENTY (20)
TOPIC: SIN
BIBLE TEXT: 1 John 1:5-9.
1 John 1:5-9
[5]This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
[6]If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
[7]But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
[8]If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
[9]If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
MEMORY VERSE: Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”.
INTRODUCTION: The Old Testament Hebrew word for sin is khata. It means to fail or miss the goal. Sin can be simply explained as any thought, word, or action that goes against God’s will. It means deviating from obedience to God’s character and will. “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:17). Someone who has not surrendered their life to the Lord Jesus cannot please God. Therefore, anything they deem as good is, instead, a sin. It’s a hard truth to take in, but a good deed must meet Cod’s standards to be good, and anything not deemed good by God is sin.

B. OVERCOMING SIN
Overcoming sin begins with accepting what God the Father has done in our lives through Jesus Christ. Here, are practical steps to overcoming sin.
i. Recognition and Confession: The first step in overcoming sin is recognizing and acknowledging it This involves honestly examining our thoughts, words, and actions in light of God’s standards. Once we recognize sin in our lives, we must confess it to God. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
ii. Repentance: True repentance involves more than just acknowledging sin; it requires a genuine turning away from sinful behavior. Acts 3:19
iii. Renewal of Mind: Overcoming sin also involves renewing our minds with God’s Word. Romans 12:2
iv. Prayer and Dependence on God: We cannot overcome sin on our own strength; we need God’s help. Through prayer, we can seek God’s guidance, strength, and empowerment to resist temptation and live in obedience to Him. James 4:7-8
v. Walking in the Spirit: As believers, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, empowering us to live holy lives. Galatians 5:16
vi. Fellowshipping with Heavenly Conscious Friends: It’s helpful to have accountability partners and be part of a supportive Christian community like the teens church. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
CONCLUSION: Ultimately, our victory over sin is made possible through faith in Jesus Christ. He died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and rose again, offering us forgiveness and new life. 1 Corinthians 15:57 says, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” By placing our faith in Jesus and His finished work on the cross, we can experience freedom from sin and abundant life in Him.
