MEMORY VERSE: Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God and your sins have hidden His face from you that He will not hear.
CENTRAL TRUTH: No sinner can have a good relationship with God.
INTRODUCTION: A minister told his congregation, “Next week, I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17.”
The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Several hands went up. The minister smiled and said, “Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying.”
STUDY GUIDE
A. WHAT IS SIN?
Sin is any action that harms the relationship we have with God and/or another person. It is choosing to act in a way that pulls us away from God. He designed us to respond to Him in a way that is in agreement with His nature. Sin breaks that connection, refuses that gift, and rejects God. According to James 4:17, ‘Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin”.
B. WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN?
1. Death – “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”- Romans 6:23.
2. ———————————————– – Isaiah 59:2.
3. Displeasure of God – Psalm 5:4.
4. Destruction-Matthew 7:13
C.WHY DOES GOD HATE SIN? GOD HATES SIN BECAUSE:
1. He is holy and holiness is His most exalted attribute – Isaiah 6:3.
2. Sin ———————————- – Matthew 15:14.
3. Sin lessens our love for God-1 John 2:15-16, James 4:4
LIFE APPLICATION: People who die in sin – unforgiven, are separated forever from God. He cannot take them into His Holy presence unless their sin is removed. Unfortunately, there is no repentance in the grave, contrary to what some people say to deceive others, that they can still confess their sins after they have died.
INVITATION: Have you confessed your sins to God, asking Him to forgive them? Do it now, so He can save you!
CONCLUSION: Sin offends God. As God is holy, He cannot Ignore, excuse or tolerate sin as if it does not matter. Sin cuts man off from God, erecting a wall to isolate sinners from Him.
PRAYER: Father, please wash away all my sins and forgive me of all my trespasses. Don’t let me ever be separated from You, in Jesus’ name.
