Open Heaven 7 August 2018 Bible Reading – 1King 13:11-22

11. Now there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done there that day. They also told their father what he had said to the king.

12 Their father asked them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him which road the man of God from Judah had taken.

13 So he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And when they had saddled the donkey for him, he mounted it

14 and rode after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied.

15 So the prophet said to him, “Come home with me and eat.”

16 The man of God said, “I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread or drink water with you in this place.

17 I have been told by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”

18 The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” (But he was lying to him.)

19 So the man of God returned with him and ate and drank in his house.

20 While they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the old prophet who had brought him back.

21 He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have defiedthe word of the Lord and have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you.

22 You came back and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.’”

There is a clarion call to all children of God to wake up to God’s expectations of them in areas such as holy living, soul winning and service to humanity. It is urgent and important to heed to this call in obedience  to our Father in heaven and in order to bring glory to His Holy Name. Our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 5:15-16 said to us:

“Neither do men light a candle, and pur it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light onto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Knowing that we live in perilous times, swiftly heeding this call has become all the more necessary. When the Holy Spirit made the call in today’s memory verse, things were not even as bad as they are today. Therefore, as the church of God, we must awaken from our slumber. The Holy Spirit says we should arise from the dead, with a promise that Christ will give us light. In other words , many of us are dead spiritually. Nevertheless, thank God that Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, is alive to his responsibility of restoring us.

How do members of the body of Christ become dead, and what is actually killing them? Today’s Bible reading gives some insight on this. It narrates the story of an old prophet who lived in Bethel, which is translated to mean ‘house of God’.

Ironically this prophet living on the house of God was backslidden. There was also another man, a young prophet  who had not compromised his faith in Yahweh. God sent him to prophesy against the idolatrous regime of Jeroboam, with a warning that he must not rest along the way until he returned home from delivering God’s message. Also he was commanded not to eat or return by the same way he went.

This young prophet did according to what the Lord had told him, except that he felt so tired and decided to take a rest under an oak tree. It is unfortunate that it was at  this resting point that the old prophet met and decieved him to go against God’s instructions. Beloved there are several old prophets around us today.

In their backslidden state they still sound knowledgeable and full of experience when they teach. To unsuspecting young men and women of God, their words are filled with wisdom. You must however beware of their heretic teachings. Their positions on several issues can deceive young minds.

The poor young prophet believed the old prophet’s lies, and he ended up taking a deadly spiritual siesta!
Tragically this same old prophet was the one who delivered God’s judgement upon the young prophet. So beware! The old prophet wanted to go to hell but wanted as many people as possible to go along with him. Awake, and don’t fall for the enemy’s tricks!

Open Heaven 7 August 2018  Hymn 12

How sweet the name of Jesus

Verse 1:
How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

Verse 2:
It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary, rest.

Verse 3:
Jesus! My Shepherd, Husband, Friend,
O Prophet, Priest and King,
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
Accept the praise I bring.

Verse 4:
Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I’ll praise Thee as I ought.

Verse 5:
Till then I would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath,
And may the music of Thy Name
Refresh my soul in death!

May God deliver us from the likes of the old prophet. We should always confirm from God irrespective of the status of who says God says. The Bible says we should try all spirit to know if its from God. I pray that God will fill with the spirit of discernment in Jesus name amen

Our Christian faith and calling are battlefields against powers and principalities. We are warned in one of the Hymns that christians should not seek repose in battlefield or rest on oar as we are in the midst of enemies. Our chief foe, the devil never rest and as a roaring lion walks about seeking whom to devour. May the Lord strengthen us to be sober and vigilant, fight the battle of life and run our christian race victoriously and finish strong in Jesus name.

Oh Lord, let our light shine that we may recognise every old prophet around us and help us to avoid every spiritual siesta till we see You face to face: this is my prayer. Christians should watch and pray, because on the faces of old prophets are not written old prophets but something very appealing.

Glory be to God for this wonderful message which reminds us as Christians not to rest on our laurels concerning the messages of God, particularly about winning souls for Christ. We must not agree with the devil to rest or be wining and dining with goats in sheep’s clothing. The Lord will give us total obedience to His commands and He will see us through our Christian race in Jesus name.

Today’s message calls for us to crave for a discerning spirit and be very alert spiritually until the Lord confirms a matter from the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses before we take action.

It also calls for us to make a speedy U-turn from pride and anger that any family member, pastor or friend has caused us which has made us to stop praying for them because Satan may cease the opportunity to destroy them and their soul may be demanded of us by the Lord.
