7 PRACTICAL WAYS TO LOVE YOUR PARENTS

7 PRACTICAL WAYS TO LOVE YOUR PARENTS

There are different ways to show love to your parents but many times we don’t pay attention to them.

We are quick to show love to our spouses, children and friends but forget our parents / especially biological parents.

God desired that we love and honor our Parents. In fact, in scriptures, honor for parents is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Our parents are God’s blessings to us. They are people who will always be there for us and want the best for us all the time.

When everyone leaves and disappoints, our parents are likely to still solidly stand behind us.

Many times, our greatest support and motivation comes from our parents. They are burden bearers and destiny helpers to us.

Unfortunately, many people do not remember to love and appreciate their parents, forgetting that one day, they will be gone.

In this article, we will show you 7 ways to love your parents.

1) SPEND TIME WITH THEM

It is easy to get busy with life and even our new family – spouse and children – and not remember to go and spend time with our parents.

The quest for a good life and career can easily make us move from place to place an forget where we came from.

A good way to show love to your parents is to spend time with them.

Intentionally take some hours or days to go and be with your parents and spend quality time with them.

This is very likely to make your parents happy because they value your presence.

2) CALL THEM

An option for people living very far from their parents is using technology to keep in touch with them.

Thanks to technology, it is now possible to spend time with people even when we are physically far from them.

Unfortunately, even with these systems of advantage in technology like audio and video calls, some people still struggle to contact their parents and connect with them.

Even with busy schedules, it is wise to set reminders and remember to frequently call and connect with your parents.

3) HONOR THEM WITH YOUR SUBSTANCE

One great way to show love and honor for people is by giving them gifts.

Many places in scriptures, gifts were used to show love and honor for people – friends, children, prophets, parents, etc.

You should show love to your parents by blessing them with your substance.

Bless them with monetary gifts, and material gifts.

Gifts of food, clothing, shelter, and other things that will make their lives easy.

4) HONOR THEM BY LISTENING TO THEM

Many people make the mistakes of just hearing their parents talk but not actually listening to them.

Especially when their parents are aged.

One way to show your parents that you truly love and value them is by listening to them speak and paying attention to their words.

Active listening means that you listen to the details of their words, counsel, and even complaints.

5) CREATE SPACE FOR THEIR LIMITATIONS

Our parents are human so they definitely are not perfect.

In many cases, they may even display some level of ignorance because they are not as enlightened as we are in certain areas.

This is why it is important to create allowances for their limitations and flaws.

They may have flaws and even bad habits but it does not take out the need for us to honor and love them.

6) APPRECIATE THEM

Many parents make untold sacrifices for their children from the day they are born.

It is easy to say it is their responsibility but as Christians, it is wiser to appreciate the sacrifices made for us.

When you see parents who never cared to take care of their parents, you will further be encouraged to appreciate the efforts and sacrifices made by yours.

You show your parents love by appreciating them and making them know that you are grateful for their efforts over you.

7) PRAY FOR THEM

Children are not the only ones in need of prayers.

Our parents need our prayers too.

Pray for your parents and declare over their lives.

As they age, they become more susceptible to many evils like diseases and even fraudulent people.

Cover them in your prayers even as you put measures in place to ensure that they do not fall victim.

A good scripture to pray over your parents is:

“I am your God and will take care of until you are old and your hair is grey. I made you and will care for you; will give you help and rescue you.” Isaiah 46:4
